Service Provider Maintenance Affects Some Software Downloads on October 27

Kivuto, the service provider for the On the Hub online software store, has scheduled maintenance on Sunday, Oct. 27, outside the University’s standard downtime period. 

Access to download software through pitt.onthehub.com—including Microsoft software for personal purchase and Adobe software for students, faculty, and staff—will be unavailable from 8 a.m. to noon ET during the maintenance period. The University’s Software Download Service (software.pitt.edu) is not affected by this maintenance.

October Microsoft Security Update

Microsoft Corporation has announced security updates for October that affect the following software: 

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Internet Explorer
  • Microsoft Edge (EdgeHTML-based)
  • ChakraCore
  • Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps
  • SQL Server Management Studio
  • Open Source Software
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365
  • Windows Update Assistant

CSSD recommends that users immediately identify and install the security updates necessary to remediate these vulnerabilities by using Microsoft's Windows Update feature on their computers as soon as possible. Additional information about the updates is available on Microsoft’s Security TechCenter.

In addition, Pitt IT recommends that all students, faculty, and staff install Antivirus (Symantec Endpoint) and Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes) Protection. Both are available at no cost through the Software Download Service. Departments can submit a help request to obtain Malwarebytes for multiple machines.

Microsoft Releases Special Security Update to Address Vulnerability in Internet Explorer

Microsoft Corporation has announced a critical new security vulnerability affecting Microsoft Internet Explorer. Microsoft announced this vulnerability in a special security advisory that was released outside of its normal monthly cycle of security bulletins.

CSSD recommends that users immediately identify and install the security updates necessary to remediate these vulnerabilities by using Microsoft's Windows Update feature on their computers as soon as possible.

The new security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer that could be exploited if a user visits a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit the vulnerability. Additional information about the updates is available on Microsoft’s website.

In addition, Pitt IT recommends that all students, faculty, and staff install Antivirus (Symantec Endpoint) and Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes) Protection. Both are available at no cost through the Software Download Service. Departments can submit a help request to obtain Malwarebytes for multiple machines.

Phishing Alert: “Faculty Evaluation” Scam Attempts to Trick Readers into Sharing Their Password

Pitt Information Technology is aware of a new email phishing scam that claims to link to a document titled “Faculty Evaluation.docx.” The link in the email typically leads to a document stored in a cloud service (for example, Google Docs, Dropbox, or OneDrive). Clicking the document prompts the reader to provide an email address and password. The scam may include a “From” address that mimics a Pitt email address.

Below is a sample of the recent fraudulent email. If you receive this message (or any message similar to it), please report it as a phishing scam by forwarding the email message as an attachment to phish@pitt.edu. Detailed instructions on reporting scams are available at our phishing awareness page.

  • Pitt Information Technology will never request your password in an email message. Any message containing such a request is a scam.
  • Use caution when interacting with messages that have been quarantined by the University’s Enterprise Spam and Virus Filter. Messages stopped by the filter have been quarantined for a reason and are likely to be malicious.
  • Pitt IT strongly recommends that you do not reply to unsolicited emails or emails from unverifiable sources. Avoid clicking on links contained in such emails, as these may lead to sites that contain malicious software. If a link looks suspicious, you can hover over the link with your mouse to preview the URL without clicking on it.
