Learning Management System (Canvas) Early Adopters Program — Starts Fall 2019

Canvas will replace CourseWeb (Blackboard Learn) as the University’s learning management system in Summer Term 2020 (2207).

To support and facilitate the transition to the new system, the Center for Teaching and Learning and Pitt Information Technology are working with a small group of teachers to create an Early Adopters Program for Fall Term 2019 (2201). The Early Adopters will teach some of their courses using the Learning Management System (Canvas) in Fall Term 2019. The rest of the University community will transition to Canvas in Summer Term 2020.

Early Adopter instructors and students in designated courses will be able to log in to Canvas at canvas.pitt.edu. Throughout the 2019-2020 academic year, the Teaching Center will serve as an information hub–posting resources, tutorials, and news and updates on the Learning Management System website at teaching.pitt.edu.

Pitt Video (Panopto) Requires Panopto Recorder Upgrade Beginning July 18

Panopto, the service provider for Pitt Video, is requiring all users of Panopto Recorder—the software app that allows users to capture and upload video content—to upgrade to version 6.0 or later. This requirement applies to the Windows, Mac, and Remote Recorder app effective Thursday, July 18.

We encourage you to download the most recent version of Panopto Recorder now by completing these steps:

  1. Log in to http://pi.tt/pittvideo
  2. Click Download Panopto in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  3. Follow the instructions to download Panopto Recorder.

If you do not upgrade Panopto Recorder to version 6.0 or later in advance, you will be prompted to upgrade the first time that you open Recorder on or after July 18.

The widespread internet issues affecting connectivity at multiple ISPs have been resolved. Service to Internet connectivity and multifactor authentication using Duo push notifications has been restored.

The widespread internet issues affecting internet connectivity at multiple ISPs are resolving. Internet connectivity is returning to normal and CSSD engineers continue to monitor the situation.

Widespread internet issues appear to be affecting connectivity across the Northeastern United States. This disruption also impacts multifactor authentication using Duo push notifications. CSSD engineers are monitoring the situation and updates will be posted as they become available.

To authenticate if you have Duo set to automatically send a push notification or call your device, click Cancel at the bottom of the webpage. Next, click the green Enter a Passcode button on the webpage. Open the Duo app and tap University of Pittsburgh to generate a passcode, enter it on the webpage, and click the green Log In button.

Dell Announces SupportAssist Vulnerability Affecting Home and Business PCs

Dell has announced a security vulnerability in troubleshooting software called SupportAssist that comes pre-installed on its home and business PCs. The vulnerability could allow an attacker who successfully exploits it to gain administrative privileges to the computer.

The following versions of SupportAssist are affected:

  • Dell SupportAssist for Business PCs version 2.0
  • Dell SupportAssist for Home PCs version 3.2.1 and all prior releases

Please note that Dell computers managed by Pitt Information Technology do not include SupportAssist and are not affected by this vulnerability.  

Dell recommends that users immediately install the security updates necessary to remediate this vulnerability. If automatic updates are enabled, Dell SupportAssist should automatically upgrade to the latest version. Users can also download the update manually from the following links:

In addition, Pitt IT recommends that all students, faculty, and staff install Antivirus (Symantec Endpoint) and Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes) Protection. Apple Announces Recall for Battery Issue Affecting Older MacBook Pros

Apple has announced a recall of some older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro computers due to an issue that may cause their batteries to overheat and pose a safety risk.

Apple advises customers to visit apple.com/support/15-inch-macbook-pro-battery-recall to determine if their MacBook Pro is affected. Owners of affected computers can receive a free battery replacement.

Phishing Alert: Scam from Fake Help Desk Address Asks Readers to “Reconfirm” Their Password

Pitt Information Technology is aware of a new email phishing scam that claims the University is performing emergency maintenance to migrate accounts, email, and Symantec Endpoint Protection. Recipients are asked to reply to the email and provide their University Computing Account username and password. The scam may include a forged “From” address that appears to originate from the Technology Help Desk.

Below is a sample of the recent fraudulent email. If you receive this message (or any message similar to it), please report it as a phishing scam by forwarding the email message as an attachment to phish@pitt.edu. Pitt Video (Panopto) Vendor Maintenance Scheduled for June 22

Panopto, the service provider for Pitt Video, has scheduled system maintenance outside the University’s standard downtime period on Saturday, June 22. Maintenance begins at 9 p.m. and is expected to last up to three hours. Users of Pitt Video will not be able to access recordings or upload new videos during the maintenance period.

LinkedIn Learning Replacing Lynda as On-Demand Training System in July

There will be an extended outage of Lynda On-Demand Training from 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, through midnight on Tuesday-Wednesday, July 9-10. The system will be unavailable during this period, as Lynda is upgraded to LinkedIn Learning, but will return earlier if work is finished ahead of schedule.

LinkedIn Learning merges the best parts of Lynda.com and LinkedIn, providing additional benefits for users, including:

  • Unlimited access to thousands of courses in business, technology, programming, professional development and creative topics
  • Personalized content recommendations based on your skills, job role(s), and interests
  • Collections that you can administer, organize, share, and assign to other learners
  • Convenient access through your web browser or on-the-go with the LinkedIn Learning Mobile App

Beginning July 10, Pitt Users can sign in to LinkedIn Learning through myPitt. Pitt users with previously active Lynda accounts will receive email with additional information directly from LinkedIn Learning.

If I have Lynda content bookmarked are there steps I should take once the transition is complete?

Yes. If you have bookmarked videos or shared playlists containing the Lynda URL, you will want to update them. Links to specific Lynda videos will point to LinkedIn Learning courses that contain the videos.

Will I lose information when my current Lynda account transitions to LinkedIn Learning?

No, most of your history will be migrated to your LinkedIn Learning account.

Will the groups that I set up in Lynda still be available in LinkedIn Learning?

Yes, groups that were set up in Lynda are also available in LinkedIn Learning.

Can I create playlists in LinkedIn Learning?

Yes, playlist creation uses the same process in LinkedIn Learning as it did in Lynda.

As a first time LinkedIn Learning user, do I need to do anything when I sign in?

The first time you sign in, you will step through an easy process to create a LinkedIn Learning profile that personalizes the default video content based on your skills and interests. If you already have a LinkedIn account, you can add your LinkedIn Learning profile to it. If not, you can simply create a LinkedIn Learning account.

Phishing Alert: Google Calendar Scam Embeds Harmful Links in Google Calendar Invitations

Pitt Information Technology has become aware of a new type of scam that attempts to trick readers into clicking on a harmful link contained in an unsolicited Google Calendar invitation.

The scammer typically uses Google Calendar to schedule a meeting with you. Notification of the meeting then arrives in your Gmail inbox. In addition, a pop-up notification about the meeting appears on any device that uses your Google Calendar or Gmail. The scammer crafts their meeting invitation to include a link to a harmful website, which may attempt to steal your credentials, bank account details, or credit card information.

To reduce your risk of falling victim to this scam, you can disable the automatic adding of calendar invitations in Google Calendar.

In addition, Pitt IT strongly recommends that you do not reply to unsolicited emails or emails from unverifiable sources. Avoid clicking on links contained in such emails, as these may lead to sites that contain malicious software. Maintenance This Weekend Affects EWI Database Servers

As part of our Next Generation Enterprise Firewall Services initiative, we will be moving the University’s remaining EWI database servers behind the Palo Alto firewall during the standard downtime period on Saturday, June 15, beginning at 11 p.m.

The database servers will be unavailable for up to 90 minutes during the maintenance period. Websites that rely on the databases that are being moved will not be available until maintenance has been completed.
