Strategic Initiatives: Health Sciences and Medical Innovation

3. Health Sciences and Medical Innovation ""

Pitt and Dell Technologies have formed a strategic partnership to deliver enduring health care outcomes, as part of Dell’s moonshot goal of positively impacting 1 billion people by 2030. This initiative has the potential to establish Pittsburgh as the epicenter for computationally enabled health sciences.

Pittsburgh Health Sciences & Medical Innovation Hub

In the first phase, Dell provided $1.6 million in computing infrastructure and services for a Pittsburgh Health Sciences & Medical Innovation Hub. Dell, Pitt IT, and the Schools of the Health Sciences are working with CMU, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, and UPMC on design and implementation of a high-performance computing cluster. Pitt IT’s role is to coordinate the technology effort and provide continuing support for the Innovation Hub infrastructure. In addition, Pitt IT will plan for future expansion and growth as new research projects take advantage of the Innovation Hub’s transformational technologies.

Infrastructure Buildout

Pitt IT and the Center for Research Computing are in the final stages of the infrastructure buildout. The goal is to enable initial access to the infrastructure in mid-July for the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and the Department of Biomedical Informatics’ application team.
