Tuesday, January 12, 2021 - 16:23

Microsoft Corporation and Adobe have announced critical security updates for January.

Microsoft Updates

Microsoft’s security updates affect the following software:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Microsoft Edge (EdgeHTML-based)
  • Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps
  • Microsoft Windows Codecs Library
  • Visual Studio
  • SQL Server
  • Microsoft Malware Protection Engine
  • .NET Core
  • .NET Repository
  • ASP .NET
  • Azure

Pitt Information Technology recommends that users immediately identify and install the security updates necessary to remediate these vulnerabilities by using Microsoft's Windows Update feature on their computers as soon as possible. Additional information about the updates is available on Microsoft’s Security TechCenter.

Adobe Update

Adobe has announced a new critical vulnerability affecting Adobe Photoshop 2021 (versions 22.1 and earlier) for both Windows and macOS. An attacker who successfully exploits the vulnerability could potentially view, change, or delete data on the affected system. Adobe recommends users update their Adobe Photoshop installation to the newest version via the Creative Cloud desktop app’s update mechanism. More details are available on Adobe’s website.

In addition, Pitt IT recommends that all students, faculty, and staff install Antivirus and Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes) Protection. Departments can submit a help request to obtain Malwarebytes for multiple machines.
