Microsoft Desktop Software for Departments
University of Pittsburgh departments can license Microsoft software at very low cost through Software Distribution Services. The agreement between the University and Microsoft covers several popular titles; see the product list below.
The license cost is $95 per user for the Microsoft Campus Agreement, which includes Office and Windows. The software included in the product list below is valued at approximately $1,200, so the savings are significant. To enroll, the entire department must be licensed; all full and part time staff are to be counted. For example, a department with 50 faculty and staff would pay an annual charge of $4,750 per year. Learn how to purchase a license for this software.
License Renewal: The license must be renewed annually. Pitt IT will send departments a notice with renewal instructions.
Product Upgrades: All product upgrades released during the year are available to departments enrolled in the Campus Software program. Departments must request upgrades; a $5 per CD media charged is assessed.
You may install your SDS-licensed full version of Windows only on desktops for which your department has acquired:
- A full license for Windows through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or from a retail source (Full Package Product)
- A qualifying operating system license (as defined by Microsoft's Product Use Rights) AND a Volume Licensing Windows upgrade license
WARNING: ANY OTHER INSTALLATION OF THIS SOFTWARE IS IN VIOLATION OF YOUR AGREEMENT AND APPLICABLE COPYRIGHT LAW.
No home use rights are provided with the departmental license. Faculty and staff may acquire Microsoft Campus software for personal use. Departments must understand the Product Use Rights, Microsoft's restrictions on how the software can be used.
Some software titles are available at no cost to all full-time and part-time University faculty through the Software Download Service at My Pitt; see product list. Faculty should be aware that students can also acquire this software or use it in the Student Computing Labs. Many of these products are also available for personal purchase by faculty and staff.
