Office 365 ProPlus and Office 2016
The University's Office 365 licensing agreement with Microsoft includes download privileges for Office 2016. Microsoft’s latest version of the Office suite of the full desktop PC (Windows and Macintosh) applications includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Microsoft markets this package commercially as Office 365 ProPlus.
These privileges are available free of charge to students and teaching faculty. Non-teaching faculty and staff can download and install these titles as well, but they need to be part of a department that has purchased the Microsoft Campus Agreement.

Perpetual Office Licensing
Students, faculty, and staff also have options for acquiring an Office installation to use while they are at the University.
Under the University's Office 365 licensing agreement, students can download and install Office 2016 from the Office 365 environment by clicking on the Install Office 2016 link on the default Office 365 homepage. Access this page by logging into the Office 365 environment or clicking on the University of Pittsburgh logo at the top of all Office 365 pages–including Pitt Email (Outlook). You can install Office 2016 in this fashion on up to five different Windows or Macintosh desktop or laptop systems.
These Office 2016 installations will be fully functional as long as you are a student. If you leave the University or graduate, they will no longer function. At which point, you will have the option to purchase an Office 365 ProPlus subscription to keep the Office 2016 applications running. These installation privileges expire once you leave the University.
Pitt students have the option to download and install Office 2016 from the Pitt On The Hub online store. The download is available at no cost. Students are entitled to two downloads of the Office 2016 installer to support a single installation on a Windows or Macintosh PC. The second download is included to act as a backup installation package in case the first download is deleted or damaged.
Pitt On the Hub also allows students to download licensed versions of earlier Microsoft Office versions (Office for Mac 2011 and Office 2013), as well as Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
These installation privileges expire once you leave the University, so make sure to install Office 2016 from Pitt On The Hub on at least one system prior to graduation.
Faculty and Staff
The University's Office 365 licensing agreement for teaching faculty and staff/faculty in departments that have purchased the Microsoft Campus Agreement includes installation of Office 2016 on Windows or Macintosh PCs or laptops. These installations are initiated by logging into Office 365 via the Pitt Passport login page, navigating to the default Office 365 homepage (by clicking on the University of Pittsburgh logo running along the top) and clicking on the Install Office 2016 link. The license allows for installation on up to five different Windows or Macintosh systems and is authorized for either home (personally-purchased) or University-owned systems.
These installations will cease to operate if you should ever leave the University.
Departments should provision University-owned PCs with Microsoft Office by taking advantage of the Microsoft Campus Agreement.
Mobile Microsoft Office Apps
An additional benefit of exploring the Office 365 environment is quick access to a variety of mobile apps that you can install on your tablet or smartphone. These are mobile versions of popular Microsoft Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. Look under Other installs or Get Office apps when you are logged into Office 365. The license that enables students, faculty, and staff access to Office 365 also covers the full licensing of these mobile apps. The installers for these apps are also available on other online app stores including the Pitt App Center.
The Microsoft Office mobile apps will install without a license code but will operate in a reduced capacity (only being able to open, but not save files). However, registering apps with your University username and password opens up locked features of the apps such as saving and creating new documents. This eligibility to fully utilize these mobile apps follows the license that enables access for Office 365. Students and teaching faculty can download and fully activate the mobile apps at no charge. Non-teaching faculty and staff need to be part of a department that has purchased the Microsoft Campus Agreement.
