Skype for Business Presence Change Takes Effect January 28

Friday, January 20, 2017 - 11:19

Beginning January 28, it will be easier to use Skype for Business to see real-time presence information for your coworkers, colleagues, and friends.

The Skype for Business presence indicator is a color-coded circle that enables you to see whether someone is available, busy, away, or out of the office. Today, you need to add someone to your Skype for Business Contacts list before you can see their presence. On January 28, if you are using the Skype for Business client, your presence will become visible by default.

The ability to view someone’s presence is an important benefit of the unified communications capabilities provided through Skype for Business. Presence allows you to instantly gauge the most efficient method to use to contact someone. For example, if the person you want to contact is available, then you can start an IM conversation or a Skype call immediately instead of sending an email and waiting for a response. If they are busy or away, then you can send an email that they can respond to when they return. You can also tag someone to receive a notification when their status changes, which can be useful if you need to contact someone as soon as they are available. You can still change your own Skype for Business presence at any time (for example, by setting it to “Do Not Disturb” or “Away” if you do not want to be contacted).
