NOTE: To create a safer environment for learning and living as part of the University's COVID-19 mitigation efforts most Student Computing Labs on the Pittsburgh campus will remain closed for the summer term. The Cathedral of Learning locations will be open, and software and services offered through the Virtual Computing Lab will remain available 24/7 from any location.

Overview

All University of Pittsburgh students with a valid University Computing Account may use any of the Student Computing Labs and Pitt Print Stations. They are conveniently located throughout the Pittsburgh campus close to residence halls and classrooms.

Pitt IT launched the Virtual Computing Lab in March 2020 to provide a remote experience that is identical to using a lab machine—with the same software, appearance, and compute power. By using Windows Virtual Desktop, any personal device with an internet connection can become a lab PC—regardless of the user’s location.

Computing Lab Locations

  • There are seven Student Computing Labs conveniently located throughout the Pittsburgh campus close to residence halls and classrooms.
  • Each lab includes a mix of Energy Star certified Windows and Mac computers.
  • There are scanners attached to select computer in every Lab and DVD drives are available in Cathedral and David Lawrence Labs.
  • Mobile Device Charging Stations are also available that enable students to charge their smartphones and tablets.

Find out which lab has available Windows and Mac computers before you get there. There are three easy ways to check:

  1. See the interactive lab status map below. You can click on each location to get additional information.
  2. Visit Pitt Mobile (m.pitt.edu) with your smart phone or mobile device, and select Student Computing Labs.
  3. Check one of our digital signs in the labs or around campus.

Click on the tabs in the ribbon above the map to display a map with icons for one of the University campuses or Pitt Print locations (Pittsburgh campus only). Click on each map icon for more information about the computing service it represents.

Computing Software

  • More than 100 individual software titles are available in the Student Computing Labs on the Windows and Mac.
  • For a full list of software on each platform, visit the software page.

Lab Safety Considerations

A primary tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is physical distancing and de-densifying shared spaces. Shared computers are a particular risk due to the prolonged exposure between a user’s face and hands and a device’s keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Collaborative Rooms and Classroom Reservations

Collaborative Rooms

  • There are three collaborative team rooms in the B-40 Alumni Hall lab and one in 230 David Lawrence Hall lab. They enable students to share presentations on a large, centrally located display and work together on dry-erase boards that line the walls of each room. Each room has a sliding door to provide privacy for groups while maintaining a quiet working environment for individuals using computers in the lab.
  • Team rooms can be reserved online.
  • Open collaborative team areas are available in the B-40 Alumni Hall lab and the 230 David Lawrence Hall lab.

Classrooms

  • The classrooms are equipped with Windows PCs.
  • G-62 Cathedral of Learning and 314 Bellefield Hall labs have classrooms available for reservation. Instructors can use the following instructions to reserve a lab classroom.
