Pitt Email: Switch from ActiveSync to Modern Authentication On Your Mobile Device

In April 2022, Pitt Information Technology announced that Microsoft Basic authentication would be retired on Aug. 1 and replaced with the more secure Modern authentication. These authentication protocols dictate how users log in to their email client: Basic authentication relies only on your username and password, whereas Modern authentication leverages Pitt Passport and multifactor authentication.

Email apps on mobile devices that use the legacy ActiveSync protocol will stop working with your Pitt Email on Aug 1. If you use ActiveSync, please take one of the following actions as soon as possible to ensure uninterrupted access to Pitt email on your mobile device.

Option 1 (Recommended): Use the Outlook Mobile App

Pitt IT recommends switching to Microsoft Outlook as your email app. Outlook integrates seamlessly with Modern authentication and does not rely on ActiveSync.

  1. Download the Outlook mobile app from the Pitt App Center for your Android or iOS device.
  2. Set up the Outlook mobile app on your device. View steps for Android or iOS devices.
  3. Delete your Pitt Email account from your previous email app (expand the menus below to learn how to delete Pitt Email from the Gmail app or the built-in Mail app for iOS).

Option 2: Delete and Re-Add Your Pitt Account to Your Current Email App

If you prefer to use a third-party email app rather than using the Outlook mobile app, please complete the following steps before Aug. 1.

1. Ensure your email app supports Modern authentication.

Most major third-party email apps support Modern authentication, including the built-in Mail app for iOS 11.3.1 and later and the Gmail app for Android. Learn how to find your iOS version or find your Android version.

2. Delete and re-add your Pitt Email account to your email app.

These steps are necessary to ensure your email app is using Modern authentication. Expand the menus below to learn how to delete and re-add your Pitt Email from the Gmail app or the built-in Mail app for iOS. Deleting your Pitt Email account will remove it from your device but will not delete any email or meeting data from your Pitt Email.
