Beware of Telephone Scam Claiming to be from FBI

Friday, October 9, 2015 - 13:29

The FBI is warning of a phone scam that primarily targets college students. The caller claims to represent the federal government or FBI, and the telephone number that displays on the recipient’s caller ID appears as though it is the number of an FBI field office.

During the scam the caller claims the student has delinquent student loans or dues, delinquent taxes, or even overdue parking tickets. The caller may threaten the student with arrest and not graduating from school if these fees are not immediately satisfied via MoneyGram.

The FBI advises students that it does not call private citizens requesting money. Please remember also that you should never respond to unsolicited requests for personal information from callers that you do not know.

If you receive a phone call similar to the one described above, please report it through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at
