BioRender is an online app used to create, edit, and collaborate on scientific diagrams, and illustrations. It offers a large library of over 40,000 icons to use in the creation of scientific posters, presentations, publications, and more. Students have free access to BioRender Premium and departments can purchase faculty/staff licenses through the University's licensing agreement.

Quickly Create Professional Scientific Images:

  • Access a large stock image library that has over 30 life science fields of images to choose from, including neuroscience, immunology, and microbiology
  • Use intuitive, drag-and-drop functionality to quickly create scientific illustrations and templates
  • Provide your teams and collaborators with anywhere, anytime access to diagrams, figures, and illustrations
  • Save your work to a variety of different formats including publications, presentations, websites, or print communications 

Getting Started:

BioRender is available to students at no cost via the Software Download Service (software.pitt.edu).

Departments can purchase BioRender licenses at significant cost savings over individual and lab licenses for faculty and staff —$100 per user, per year—from the PittIT Software Store in PantherExpress.

A University account for BioRender requires account activation. Make a selection from the following options:

I Am a Student

  1. Login to the Software Download Service using your University Computing Account username and password.
  2. Search for BioRender, then select it from the results.
  3. Click the plus sign ('+') next to the Installation Instructions accordion, click the link provided.
  4. Click Log in now, then log in using multifactor authentication.

    Note: You should receive an email confirmation the first time you connect.
  5. Complete the requested profile information for your account, click Next, use the drop down-lists to select any your primary and secondary areas of research, then click Start illustrating!
  6. Review the brief tutorial in the popup window, then you can begin using BioRender.
    Tip: For a large list of video tutorials, click Learning Hub from the BioRender menu ribbon.
  7. To log out, click on your name in the upper right-hand side of the menu, then select Sign out from the drop-down list.

I Am a Faculty/Staff User

Have an authorized purchaser for PantherExpress for your department or area purchase a BioRender License for you using steps 1 through 4.

You will be provided with instructions—documented as steps 5 through 8—to activate BioRender that allow you to activate your BioRender Account. 

Note: If you have an existing BioRender account, please make sure to opt-in to your University account using your original Pitt email address, rather than an email alias or non-University email address. Before proceeding, use these instructions to change the account address to your Pitt email address.

  1. Go to my.pitt.edu, login using your University Computing Account username and password, then access the PantherExpress task on the right-hand side.
  2. Click the shopping cart icon, select the PittIT Software Store punchout under "Internal University Suppliers", then search for BioRender.
  3. Click Add to Cart.
  4. Receive an email receipt containing instructions on how to access the software. The purchaser will provide the faculty or staff member with the instructions to activate an account.
    Note: The following instructions allow faculty and staff to activate a University account.
  5. Click Log in now, then log in using multifactor authentication.

    Note: You should receive an email confirmation the first time you connect.
  6. Complete the requested profile information for your account, click Next, use the drop down-lists to select any your primary and secondary areas of research, then click Start illustrating!
  7. Review the brief tutorial in the popup window, then you can begin using BioRender.
    Tip: For a large list of video tutorials, click Learning Hub from the BioRender menu ribbon.
  8. To log out, click on your name in the upper right-hand side of the menu, then select Sign out from the drop-down list.
    Note: You can cancel a personal BioRender subscription. You will need to contact BioRender. Additional information is available here.
