Phishing Alert: "IT Desk" Scam

Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) is responding to a new email phishing scam that claims your email account will be removed due to "congestion" unless you click a link to confirm it. The link directs readers to a harmful Web page that attempts to collect their username and password. The email scam usually originates from a University email address.

The following is a sample of the recent fraudulent email. If you receive this message (or any message similar to it), please report it as a phishing scam by forwarding the email message as an attachment to phish@pitt.edu. Detailed instructions on reporting scams are available at http://technology.pitt.edu/phishingscams.

The link in the phishing email directs readers to a malicious Web page (shown below) that attempts to collect your username and password.

CSSD strongly recommends that you do not reply to unsolicited emails or emails from unverifiable sources. Avoid clicking on links contained in such emails, as these may lead to sites that contain harmful software. If a link looks suspicious, you can hover over the link with your mouse to preview the URL without clicking on it.

In addition, CSSD recommends that all users install Symantec Endpoint Protection software and use the LiveUpdate feature to get the latest virus definitions. As a complement to Symantec Endpoint Protection, CSSD offers Malwarebytes Premium for individuals and departments at no cost. Students, faculty, and staff can download Malwarebytes and Symantec Endpoint Protection at no cost through the Software Download Service at My Pitt. Departments can submit a help request to obtain Malwarebytes for multiple machines.

SharePoint Online Provides Rich Set of Collaboration Tools

SharePoint Online and Office 365 provide University of Pittsburgh students, faculty, and staff with a rich set of collaboration tools from a single, convenient online location. Create and develop your ideas, share information with friends and colleagues, and work together more effectively.  

With SharePoint Online and Office 365, you can:

  • Create Collaborative Web sites: Create sites that you can use to store files, collaborate with others, create tasks, manage schedules, build workflows, or start a blog. You can share your site with others, even people outside Pitt.
  • Store, Sync, and Work Together on Documents: SharePoint includes OneDrive for Business, which allows you to store up by 5 TB of files in the cloud so that you can easily access them across all of your devices. You can share your documents with anyone, and you can use sync to work with your files while you're offline. You can even work together on the same document at the same time, chat with collaborators right from within the document, and easily revert to previous versions of files whenever you need to.
  • Use Office on Any Device: Office Online gives you access to Office products like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more in the cloud. So you can create and edit Office documents from anywhere on any device.
  • Connect People, Documents, and Ideas: SharePoint includes Delve, a unique visual search tool that helps you find useful and interesting content anywhere in Office 365. You can use Delve to find documents you have worked on recently or documents your friends and colleagues have been working on. Just type a name and you will be able to see everything that person has given you permission to view.
  • Share and Manage Your Videos: Office 365 Video is included with SharePoint Online. It allows you to upload, watch, and share videos anywhere, anytime, on any device. Spotlight recommendations and custom channels help you find video content that is most relevant and helpful to you.

Students, faculty, and staff can access SharePoint Online at pitt.sharepoint.com or by logging in to My Pitt and clicking SharePoint Online. Network Maintenance to Affect BST, Petersen on Oct. 15

Scheduled maintenance will affect wired and wireless network service and telecommunications service in Biomedical Science Tower and Petersen Events Center during the standard downtime period on October 15. Network and voice service will be unavailable from 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 until 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 16 while work is completed.

Although the maintenance is scheduled to end at 3:00 a.m., network service will be restored earlier if work is completed ahead of schedule. This maintenance is necessary to enhance the stability and reliability of the network.

PittNet(Wireless): Getting the Best Wireless Experience

Introduction

The utilization of wireless service here at Pitt has increased dramatically during the past few years. In the month of September 2011, there were 1.2 million wireless sessions on all the University's campuses. By September 2013, that number had grown to 17.5 million sessions. In the month of February 2014, there were more than 19.3 million sessions.

We are constantly working to enhance our Wireless PittNet service. Due to past upgrades of the certificates that are used to connect to our network, you may need to take additional steps to connect. Some devices will reconnect without any issue.
