Update Your Email Client Settings to Use New IMAP Enhancements

Monday, June 8, 2009

The University's IMAP email service has been upgraded to provide enhanced security and make it easier to send messages from off-campus locations using email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird.

All users of the IMAP email service will be required to update their email client settings by November 2009. All students, faculty, and staff can update their email client settings today to take advantage of the enhanced service.

You will notice the following changes after you update your email client settings:

  1. You will now be able to send messages securely from off-campus locations without having to connect to the Secure Remote Access Service.
  2. The plus sign that is automatically appended to your email address when you send a message will be removed. This simply means that the "From" address of the email messages you send will display as username@pitt.edu rather than username+@pitt.edu. This change will not affect your ability to receive mail. You will continue to receive all messages that are addressed to you, regardless of whether they include the plus sign.
