Connecting to PittNet Wi-Fi from Windows

Overview

You can manually configure your computer using the steps in this help sheet. You must have installed the InCommon certificates before completing the instructions below. Refer to the help sheet titled Installing the InCommon and UserTrust Certificates (Windows) for details.

 

Detail

Section 1 - Enable the Wireless Auto Config Service

1. From the Windows 10 Start screen, type Control Panel and then press the Enter key. This will search for and automatically open the Control Panel.

Note: In Control Panel, set View by: to Large Icons.

2. Select Administrative Tools.

3. Select Services.

4. Right click on WLAN AutoConfig and select Properties.

5. Set Startup type: to Automatic, click Apply, then click OK.

6. Restart the computer.

Section 2 - Configure the Native 802.1x Client

1. From the Windows 10 Start screen, type Control Panel and then press the Enter key. This will search for and automatically open the Control Panel.
Note: In Control Panel, set View by: to Large Icons.

2. Click Network and Sharing Center.

3. Click Set up a new connection or network.

4. Select Manually connect to a wireless network, then click Next.

5. Enter the following settings, then click Next.

a. Network Name: WIRELESS-PITTNET
b. Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
c. Encryption Type: AES

Note: If you are prompted that the network already exists, select Use the existing network. If that previous configured network is unable to connect, you will need to use the instructions listed in the next section to remove your previous Wireless PittNet connection.

6. Click the Security tab and enter the following settings:

a. Choose a network authentication method should be set to PEAP
b. Remember my credentials should be unchecked
c. Click the Settings button next to Choose a network authentication method

7. Enter the following settings:


a. Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate is checked
b. Connect to these servers is checked and set to ias.cssd.pitt.edu
c. USERTrust RSA Certification Authority is checked under Trusted Root Certification Authorities
d. The Notifications before connecting: option is set to Don't ask user to authorize new servers or trusted CAs
e. Select Authentication Method is set to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
f. Enable fast reconnect is checked
g. Click Configure next to Select Authentication Method

8. Enter the following settings:

a. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)
b. Click OK

9. Click OK.

10. Click OK.

11. Click Close.

12. Click the network status indicator icon in the system tray, select WIRELESS-PITTNET, and click Connect.

13. Enter your University Computing Account username and password.

Troubleshooting: Removing Your Previous Wireless PittNet Connection

Use these instructions if you have previously configured your computer to access Wireless PittNet and are having difficulty connecting. Once completed, you can re-configure your Windows 10 computer to access Wireless PittNet using the steps that appear in Section 2 of this document.

1. From the Windows 10 Start screen, click Settings.

2. Click Network & Internet.

3. Click Services.

4. Select Wi-Fi, then click Manage Wi-Fi Settings.

5. Select Wireless PittNet, then click Forget.

6. Continue your Wireless PittNet configuration using the steps in Section 2 - Configure the Native 802.1x Client.

Troubleshooting: Checking Your Time and Date

One of the first places to check if you are having problems completing a wireless connection is the PC's time and date settings.

1. Enter "time and date" in the Windows 10 search field (where it says "Type here to search").

2. Click on the "Change the date and time" option that appears under "Best match."

3. Use the Date & time settings window to make sure that your PC is set up for the correct time zone. Use the "Change" button if needed to make sure your PC's time settings are correct.

Troubleshooting: Restarting Your WiFi Service

Sometimes, a PC's wireless services will not adjust to changes immediately. Restarting your PC's wireless services is one of the first things to try if your system is not correctly connecting to WIRELESS-PITTNET.

1. Enter "net" in the Windows 10 search field (where it says, "Type here to search").

2. Click on the "Check network status" option that appears under "Best match."

3. Click on Wi-Fi from the list of categories on the left of the "Settings" window.

4. Move the slider icon under "Wi-Fi" to the Off setting. After a couple of seconds, slide it back to On.

This will restart your PC's wireless services.

Troubleshooting: Additional Configuration Instructions for Dell and IBM Computers

If you attempt to connect to Wireless PittNet and fail, you may receive an error message stating that other software is managing the connection. If so, disable or uninstall existing wireless networking software that was pre-installed on your computer by the manufacturer. The following steps explain how to either disable or uninstall pre-existing wireless software on a Dell computer. We will add instructions for other computer manufacturers as needed.

Disable Dell Wireless Networking Software

1. Right click on the Dell Wireless Utility, located in the System tray. It is represented by several green bars.

2. Click Open.

3. Click the Wireless Networks tab. Uncheck the Let this tool manage your wireless settings checkbox.

4. Click Apply then click OK.

Return to the top of this page and complete the instructions to connect to Wireless PittNet.

1. Select Start, then Search.

2. Search for Add or remove programs.

2. Select Apps & features from the left-hand column.

3. Search for and select Dell Unified Wireless Suite, then click Uninstall.

4. Return to the top of this page and complete the instructions to connect to Wireless PittNet.
