Spam & Virus Filtering

The University's Spam and Virus Filtering Service is activated for all student, faculty, and staff email addresses. The service works by scanning all incoming email addressed to your University email address (username@pitt.edu). Messages containing viruses and messages suspected of being spam will be quarantined in your Message Center.

If any messages have been quarantined in your Message Center during the week, you will receive an email message letting you know that this has occurred. It is recommended that you check your Message Center periodically to ensure that no legitimate messages have been quarantined. Any message that is quarantined will remain in your Message Center for 28 days. After that time it will be automatically deleted. The Message Center provides a safe environment in which to view quarantined messages.

Spam filtering is automatically enabled at the “moderate” setting. Log in to my.pitt.edu, click the Webmail tab, and click Message Center to adjust your spam filtering settings or view your quarantined mail.

Note: This service only filters your University email for viruses. You should always use anti-virus software, such as Symantec Endpoint Protection, on your computer.
