Update Your IMAP Email Client by November 1, 2009
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
In June, CSSD announced the implementation of Authenticated SMTP to provide enhanced security and make it easier to send IMAP email messages from off-campus locations. IMAP users who have not begun using this service, must update their email client settings by November 1, 2009. Please refer to the help sheet Configure IMAP Email Clients to Enable SMTP Authentication for instructions on updating your email client settings. Note: This action will also remove the plus sign (+) that is automatically appended to your email address when you send a message. This is important if you post to restricted mailing lists or use digital certificates-see information below.
After you update your settings, you will no longer need to connect to the Secure Remote Access Service when sending email from off campus.
***Important note for users who post to restricted mailing lists or use digital certificates:
As soon as you update your email client settings, the plus sign (+) that is automatically appended to your email address when you send a message will be removed. Therefore, if you post to restricted mailing lists, you should unsubscribe to those mailing lists before updating your email client settings, update your email client, and then re-subscribe to the restricted mailing lists. No action at all is required if you post to mailing lists managed by the University's Mailman service or if you read but do not post messages to mailing lists.
You also need to take additional actions after updating your email client if you use digital certificates or PGP encryption tools. Details are provided in the online help sheet.
***Important technical note for server administrators and individuals using anonymous port 25 submissions:
If you use SMTP on port 25 to run automated processes (for example, to send automated email notifications), you will need to contact the Technology Help Desk at 412 624-HELP [4357] and ask to have these machines added to an exceptions list so that they can continue to use port 25 after November 1, 2009. Please provide the IP addresses for all machines that need to be added to the exceptions list as well as a brief description of the automated service that you are running.
Please contact the Technology Help Desk at 412 624-HELP [4357] if you have any questions about this announcement or need assistance updating your email client settings
