Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Microsoft Corporation has announced a critical new security vulnerability affecting components of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Microsoft announced this vulnerability in a special security bulletin that was released outside of its normal monthly cycle of security bulletins. CSSD recommends that users immediately install the security update necessary to repair this vulnerability by using the Pitt Software Update Service.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-034 describes three vulnerabilities that could allow a hacker to take control of a computer if a user visits a web site designed for this purpose. Microsoft also released a special security bulletin affecting Visual Studio that it rates as Moderate. Patches for these vulnerabilities are available from the Pitt Software Update Service. Users are strongly urged to automatically download and install these patches as soon as possible.

CSSD also recommends that all users install Symantec AntiVirus software and use the LiveUpdate feature to get the latest virus definitions. Symantec AntiVirus is available at no cost to students, faculty, staff, and departments from CSSD Software Licensing Services, 105 Bellefield Hall, and can also be downloaded from software.pitt.edu.
